Hi, I’m Naima and I am here to support you in getting the care you need and deserve.
I have been blessed to hold numerous intersecting roles where I have trained, educated and supported people through a spectrum of reproductive health experiences; during ob/gyn exams, through pregnancy, miscarriage and perinatal loss, childbirth, the postpartum period, abortion, surrogacy and adoption. I also have extensive experience supporting survivors of sexual assault and other forms of violence and I have supported people at the end of life.
I lead with empathy, caring confidence and a deep belief that people are the experts on their bodies, families and lives. I seek to honor everyone’s autonomy and lived experiences with a strong focus on informed decision making. My role is always non-medical and therefore, I do not offer any specific medical advice.
As a full-spectrum doula, I have borne witness again and again to various forms of medical violence. From unannounced or unwanted pelvic exams, to demeaning language of fear that invades people’s sense of control and autonomy, these experiences can be traumatic and have a long-lasting impact on people’s sense of confidence about their bodies, their ability to parent, and can often prevent them from seeking ongoing gynecological care.
These experiences have also impacted me, driving a passion to help shift the paradigm of care people receive. As an ob/gyn doula for more than 25 years, I have helped to educate health care providers on the critical importance of using a trauma informed and psycho-socially aware approach in all care settings, with a particular focus on ob-gyn exam situations. And I help prepare people for and accompany them to ob/gyn appointments and exams.
Other relevant roles include creating and directing for 15 years, a Community Birth Worker training program where I trained more than 300 community doulas and lactation peer counselors in Philadelphia.
My work is supported by ongoing professional development. I am a Certified Trauma-Informed Trainer, a Psychological First Aid Responder, a Medical Interpretation Trainer, and Certified Lactation Counselor (CLC).
I consult as a coach and facilitator for groups and organizations seeking to grow their leadership skills, culture change, and anti-racist frameworks. I have been a racial justice/human rights activist and community organizer for decades with a particular focus on reproductive justice and anti-prison industrial complex work.
